Shockingly Realistic ’80s Electronics Made Out of Neon Paper

Shockingly Realistic ’80s Electronics Made Out of Neon Paper: "

When we remember the ’80s — and, truth be told, this might have something to do with the fact that we were kids then — we always seem to recall the era in neon colors. French graphic design studio Zim & Zou (the duo of Lucie Thomas and Thibault Zimmermann) must have similar memories, as they’ve sculpted a bright, wonderfully detailed series of retro electronics out of brightly colored paper. From a film-spewing Leica and a photo-spitting Polaroid to a Walkman with headphones and a cassette tape that fits inside it. Check out some of our favorite photos of Zim & Zou’s work after the jump, then click over to Behance to see the whole set, along with a video documenting their process.

Red Bull Creation Spawns Wheelie Mobile, Spinning See-Saw, And Other Crazy Contraptions

Red Bull Creation Spawns Wheelie Mobile, Spinning See-Saw, And Other Crazy Contraptions: "

Red Bull gives you wings, right? Well, apparently it also gives 16 teams the energy necessary to build brand new and quite random inventions as a part of Red Bull’s annual Red Bull Creation event. In a nutshell, Red Bull throws out a secret theme at the very beginning of the weekend and teams are asked to create gizmos and gadgets that exemplify that theme, all in a matter of 72 hours.

This year, it was “Energy In Motion,” and that’s exactly what we saw there. From spinning see-saws to a “WPV” (wedgie-powered vehicle), imagination was certainly not lacking at McCarren Park in Brooklyn yesterday.

It would be almost stupid to try and describe what we saw there without images:

Maker: Innovative Thirst

Creation: A clay-powered mobile pod with suspended electricity-generating swing set.

Maker: NYC Resistor

Creation: A steam-powered off-road trolley car, with a nice bronze-style finish.

Maker: Hack RVA

Creation: A hacked up shopping cart that does its own hardcore poppa-wheelies, fittingly named the Wheelie Mobile.

Maker: Donner Party 2.0

Creation: A electric hybrid tricycle fitted with a dryer that also works as a humongous blender. Strawberry daiquiris anyone?

Maker: Team Doublewide

Creation: A robot called “The Amazing Cyclo.” Think Johnny 5, but as a puppet, with an LCD face and a single wheel made of shoes for a foot. And a remote control, of course.

“Team Award” Winner: Techshop

Creation: A spinning see-saw that lifts riders 12 feet in the air, while an accelerometer waits for the perfect moment to trigger an attached Polaroid camera, ultimately grabbing amusement-park-style candids of the riders’ faces.

Drum roll please! And the winner is…

Maker: 1.21 Jigawatts

Creation: Alright, this one’s a bit more difficult to explain. Basically, 1.21 Jigawatts wired an enormous wooden hamster wheel into a wireless network and gave it its own phone number. According to its maker, the massive wireless wheel could receive up to 60,000 one-word text messages at the same time, and then print out the texts on the pavement by rolling along the ground. In all honesty, the only purpose of this contraption is to make people stop in their tracks, drop their jaw, and stare. Obviously, that’s exactly what 1.21 Jigawatts created: a show-stopper.

Team Award winner Techshop went home with a brand new Makerbot 3D Printer, which creates little 3D sculptures from a scanned images (pictured below). 1.21 Jigawatts, Red Bull Creation’s grand prize winner, left the show with $5,000 and four 40W Hobby Laser Cutters.

Crap Hound No. 8: Superstitions! All New Issue! trying to raise $ on Kickstarter

Crap Hound the Art mag is trying to raise money for its next issue at kickstarter.

ABOUT CRAP HOUND: Between a brief introduction and the end credits, Crap Hound is pure imagery. Each page is filled with high-contrast line art, culled from vintage catalogs, advertising, obscure books, and found ephemera. Through sheer volume of artfully arranged iconography, Crap Hound provides a visual survey of dozens of popular and lesser known superstitions. This all new issue is 100-pages including the cover and features two copyright free typefaces!
Debuting in 1994 and created by Sean Tejaratchi, Crap Hound became a favorite of both zine readers and publishers, and has received enthusiastic reviews from sources including The New York Times Magazine, RE/Search Books, AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts), and the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.
Read a great interview with Sean by Ian Lynam in PingMag. Check out the issues currently available at Reading Frenzy.
JULY 2011: We're ready to take the next issue of Crap Hound to press! This time around we're offering pre-orders on the new issue, as well as a variety of highly covetable rewards! We've offered several combo options, but if you don't see the combination of rewards you would like, simply message us via Kickstarter and we will be happy to put together a special reward package for you.
Our goal this time around is $15,000.00, which will cover the cost of printing 5000 copies of the magazine, producing all of the other rewards, shipping and handling, and project fees. Money raised above our goal will simply make it easier and quicker for us to produce these items.
The new issue will retail for $12-$13 depending on our print run, which will be determined by this project. We like to keep Crap Hound as affordable as possible -- you would be hard pressed to find a resource of this quality and quantity for twice the price -- so every dollar we're able to raise through pre-orders and rewards really helps the cause!
